Samsung has recently announced an agreement with Qualcomm, according to which it will pay $1.3 billion for using Qualcomm’s CDMA, WCDMA and OFDMA patents for the next 15 years. The $1.3 billion will be paid upfront, with additional royalties to be paid afterwards.
According to Telecoms Korea, the $1.3 billion that will be received from Samsung accounts for about 80% of Qualcomm’s net income of fiscal year 2009. Reportedly, the new deal with Qualcomm was signed by Samsung “under the most favorable conditions”, thanks to the fact that the South Korean company is Qualcomm’s most important customer.
