The tight integration with several IM services (Skype, GTalk, MSN Messenger, etc;) is one of the great features of the Nokia N900. It is super convenient. I sang about it in my first impressions review of the Nokia N900. You just enter your IM login and all your contacts of these appear in the address book. It may take some work from the merger of these contacts, especially for incomplete profiles, but they are there, and when you talk to someone, just select the mode – Skype, GTalk, SMS, e-mail or phone call.
It just works, and I changed the patterns of communication on progress significantly. These days I am doing much more IM / Skype on the road than ever before. Or was. Because I just had a major flaw in this combined approach on the Nokia N900 phone book. He lost most of my contact list of Skype and Gtalk last 6 years in the process.
It turns out that when you delete a phone contact on the Nokia N900, the process does not stop with the headset. Please contact merged Skype, Gtalk and mobile phone data, or if you just want to eliminate clutter IM contact from the phone – and N900 will remove this information from the servers of the IM service too!
Recently I wanted to remove all contacts from my N900 agenda. And he did. I have not found “Remove All” option at the moment (is carefully hidden under the “settings”), so it was the manual way. “Remove Contacts” and then manually select and delete a number.
In the process, I received a message saying: “Elimination of contacts will also remove the server”, but did not think twice about it. I had a backup, and what matters to me in contact with the elimination of some server?
What you should. Because the “server”, I meant N900 Skype and Gtalk servers. And promptly removed all contacts from there. The only information that was backed up servers, contact information was merged. That was something like 5% of all contacts he had. The rest of the contacts in Skype and Gtalk just left.
Later, when I tried to find out what happened, I found an option to delete all contacts faster and safer. This is a “delete all contacts” option under the Settings menu of contacts. And do not delete IM contacts. But it was too late.
Should have been more careful at the moment? Yes, and if I was the elimination of a Skype contact from the list, and the N900, he said – let’s delete this contact from the server, you would probably have been more careful. After all, if I am in the elimination of Skype contacts on my PC, I hope to disappear into the ether.
But N900 is not a PC. And much that is like a computer, much as I have changed the patterns of communication, basically, I still think of it as a smartphone. 10-30 And when I delete contacts from your address book, some regular phone contacts, some of Skype and GTalk, I expect that my IM contacts to be removed from the cloud as well.
